Hafez (1325 – 1389): Ghazal No. 291

In this hopeless place, I have tried my chance,
Alas, it's time to pack, and move forward, advance!

By regret overwhelmed, I bite my lips and hands.
as-if petals of a rose, bit by bit my heart lands–
on the dusts and sands.

And last night, I heard the nightingale rhymed:
Wishing to get by when it’s rough and tough–
or when it is shaky and nothing is enough,
then, you too, break free! Let go of your vow!
And soften your words, keep your thoughts inside!

For nil, the lucky odds- are to last always,
It is the law of the house, good fortune can reverse,
Even Jam* was removed of his throne; rmember Hafez!
